music video analysis 2

This music video that I am analysing would be from pop singer Lady Gaga with her music video to bad romance. For the first 13 seconds of the video the actual song does not start but it primarily focuses on Lady Gaga dressed in a golden minidress with her trademark of a blonde wig and sunglasses so that audiences can familiarise the woman at the centre as being Lady Gaga and that she is the centre of attention. The people surrounding her who are standing up dressed up in sort of mafia clothing would cause curiousity as to why they are there in the first place. The first shot that is presenting all of these characters is shown in a long wide shot and eventually it zooms forwards in a slowing motion until a close up of Lady Gaga is revealed.
The melody of the song begins with a faint lighted bathhouse with the natural lighting pouring through the room revealing what appears to be white coffins laid on the floor. A meduim close up shot of the lettering "bath haus of gaga" is displayed by the glasses door. This term would refer to the artist's own clothing line, in which she has managed to advertise on her video. By emerging the name of the clothing line into the video would mean that she is appealing to her audiences not just music wise but also in another way, in her art form. The first hook of the song is introduced and Lady Gaga and females emerge from the coffins dressed all in white even covering thier faces. They start dancing as if they are zombies being reborn. This reminds some viewers of the Thriller video where the zombies emerge from the ground right at the start. The scene with the female dancers is then shot striaght to a meduim long shot of the artist in a bath full of water dressed in a transparent material with her eyes computerised to make it look like they were bigger then they normally would be. During this scene with her in the bathtub the alternative scene of her facing a mirror with her back turned against the audience and her face being recognised in the mirror is shown. This two scenes are shown a bit at a time whilst she is singing the lyrics. Between 1.27 and 1.50 the chorus of the song is revealed and the dimly lit room is powered with flourescent lighting so that we can see the whole details of the props and mise-en-scene. During 1.50 she is forced to drink alcohol in the bathtub from two women also forcing her to strip her clothing off. This is shown in a close up of the struggle she is going though. Whilst this scene occurs another scene of her facial features is viewed of her crying. The crying is due to the emotional memories she had whilst being captured as a sex slave.
As the second verse begins, there is a high angled shot of her dressed in diamonds surrounded by female dancers ripping of her clothing. The high angled shot was used to connote the insecurity and the strain she was feeling at the time. She seems to appear to be in a room full of men sitting down bidding for her. The low angle shot of the main man sitting in the middle is shown for him to be wearing a golden metal covering his jaw. The annotation of the low angle is to express his status in the room as the more overpowering person to the artist. Whilst she is dancing seductively towards the man she wins the main man over and the bidding finally comes to a stop. At 3.48 long shots of the man sitting by the bed and Lady Gaga dressed in a polar bear jacket is then shown. Immediately its revealed she was bidded in order to perform adult scenes with this man. A pastiche is then emerged with a long wide shot of her lying on the ground wearing red lace with her dancers leing beside her preparing the audience that a performance is about to take place. The two scenes go from one to the other in a faded affect. During the bed scene her emotions are more confident and has a strong look on her face as she walks to the man with the camera panning on the side of her. The chorus is repeated a few times at the end when she reveals what shes wearing underneath. The scene with her dancing is then shown and whilst she is singing the chorus in a more angry way the performance ends with the lights turning off and a long meduim shot of the dancers stopping around her in a sort of freeze frame. The switch to the bed scene its shown that the bed had combusted and the man is no longer alive but in a skeletal form with Lady Gaga lieing beside smoking in a calm state. The overall message of this video was to raise awareness of the cruelty of girls being victimnised to be sold to men. But seeing as Lady Gaga had to appeal to her target audience in this case between the ages of 13 and onwards she musnt seem like shes exploiting every dark trait of sex slavery. The fashion and how she portrays the scenes are also shown to be caught in your mind in terms of the visual effects and takes you more away from the song itself.
